Living in the Moments of Nothing
In my project “Living in the Moments of Nothing” I am constructing satirical vignettes of a domestic family life in which the subjects are paralyzed by the weight of society's expectations of harmonious and magical experiences. I am calling attention to the ultra mundane and boring moments that are not filled with emotion or connection; but the seconds unnoticed when life is happening and you are just there existing. We choose to document and share what we want to remember or what we want others to think about our lives- but forget the times when nothing of note is happening- and this is most of the time. The majority of our life is spent living in the moments of nothing. The scenes are full of all the elements of fun, yet the subjects don’t express the emotions we strive as caregivers to create through the excessive. Today's American society demands an assumed ideal life in which there is a compulsive need to create meaningful memories which are worthy of envy and accepted as truth. In reality, the experience falls flat and can be generally seen as unexceptional.
The images are driven by the interaction of color, light and composition to pull the viewer to examine every element within the frame. The scenes suggest a pause, yet a sense of anxiety lingers from missing information and unconventional juxtapositions. Subtle hints of absurdity allow the viewer to find humor in the mundane. The subjects are seen together, but in separate emotional spaces, experiencing a period of stasis and lack of connection.
